RYA Shorebased & online courses plus Own boat training
Who We Are
Nautical Training has been founded by Nick and Tim. We both have a wealth of experience each, in yachting, dinghy sailing, and as Advanced Powerboat Instructors.
Our shorebased school is easily accessible in the heart of the East Midlands, we will be offering the full extensive range RYA shorebased courses. Using our links with coastal centres we can assist students in finding the best location for undertaking their practical courses in Powerboating, Personal Watercraft (Jet Ski), Motor Cruising, Inland Waterways or Yachting.
Nick is the centre’s principal and is the Navigation and VHF chief instructor. Tim is the Diesel chief instructor. We also have a wide range of external instructors/assessors that we work with to increase the range of courses we currently offer.
I started boating in 2005 at an outdoor activity centre on the Blackwater Estuary in Tollesbury. I did my RYA dinghy sailing level 2 then decided sailing wasn’t for me. It was when they first asked me to crew the safety boats (a Humber RIB, a Porter RIB and a ‘Jaffa’) that my love for powered craft developed.
Since I started powerboating, I have worked hard to consolidate my experience into qualifications. I am currently an RYA Advanced Commercial Power Boat Instructor (APBI) with Safety Boat certificate, an RYA PWC Instructor and an RYA Shorebased Instructor (VHF SRC) this allows me to teach PB1 and 2, Safety Boat, Intermediate Powerboat, Advanced Powerboat, Personal Watercraft (Jet ski) and VHF SRC courses.
I have my Advanced Powerboat certificate and my Advanced Power Boat CoC qualification with Commercial endorsement and also work commercially for boat trips, safety cover, refresher courses etc from time to time.
I am the Assistant Bosun at Nottinghamshire County Sailing Club and ensure their 9 Powerboats are kept in safe running order, performing tube and hull repairs and engine servicing.
When I am not on the water I run a website design agency, work as a cloud engineer, as well as spending time with my young family.
I started boating in 1979, sailing with school in a GP14 and a Mirror, which setup my love of boating. By 1989 I was a Dinghy instructor, with powerboat level two, in 1990 I got my RYA fleet rescue endorsement and two years later did my coastal conversion.
In the mid 90’s I started Yachting, mainly on the south coast and by 2000 was an Advanced Powerboat Instructor, actively teaching and driving commercial ribs doing everything from Rib rides, filming work to working with commercial divers.
I am currently an RYA Advanced Commercial Power Boat Instructor (APBI) with a Safety Boat certificate, and a Diesel Instructor, which allows me to teach PB1 and 2, Safety Boat and Intermediate Powerboat, Advanced Powerboat and the RYA Marine Diesel Maintenance Course.
I have been the Bosun, which is a voluntary position at Nottinghamshire County Sailing Club, since 2013, where I maintain 4 Ribs, 3x Rigiflex, a Pioner Multi and an Arvo 215. Conducting all tasks including engine maintenance, electrics, plastic, fibreglass and tube repairs.
