Welcome to Nautical Training. This information pack should help provide most of the basic joining information you require, however please do not hesitate to contact us with any further questions you may have.
The Accordion opposite, or below if on mobile details the COURSE SPECIFIC joining instructions for your course. Please ensure you familiarize yourself with the relevant ones there too! Some contain further IMPORTANT instructions.
Lunch: We do not include lunch in the course price and a packed lunch is recommended. There is a very nice village shop not far from the centre but opening hours cannot be guaranteed. We DO include tea/coffee and very nice biscuits though!
Facilities: Free on-site parking is available.
How to find us: Our training centre address is Sea Scout Hall, North End, Farndon, Newark NG24 3SX
Follow signs for Farndon Marina, when you can see the marina barrier, look for a track off to the left JUST BEFORE the barrier. We are down there. Please park in the car park and come through the metal gate into the building on the right..
All Courses: 0900 start to approximately 1700 each day, unless otherwise agreed for own boat training or refreshers.
What to expect from a Practical Course: These are held out on the river for most of the course however please check your confirmation e-mail to confirm timings.Life jackets are provided, please bring waterproofs and appropriate footwear. No sandals or flip-flops, and expect the footware to get a little wet.
What to expect from a Shorebased Course: These are held in our classroom and most days run from 0900 to approximately 1700, however please check your confirmation e-mail to confirm timings. Those completing Day Skipper and Coastal/Yachtmaster shorebased courses will also have a small amount of homework each evening.
All necessary books and equipment are provided but please bring a notepad and pen.

Practical Course Joining Instructions
The Practical courses are taught 80% on the water and 20% in the classroom. As a result of this you will need to bring waterproof clothing and good footware which you dont mind getting wet. A change of clothes and a towel is also handy just incase the waterproofs leak etc.
We will supply you with one of our lifejackets to wear, we know these have been serviced and are in good order.
Please ensure you bring a passport sized photograph with you if doing Powerboat level 2 or Inland Waterways Helmsman. This is needed for your certificate, we will not be able to issue it without this.
Courses run 9AM to 16.30/17.00 each day.
VHF SRC Course Joining Instructions
The SRC / VHF course is a one-day shore-based course followed by an assessment which takes between 30min and 1 hour.
Participating on our VHF course (including GMDSS) requires some pre-course studying from your side. Please read the pages from the course handbook G31, this is pre course reading (approx 3 hours) is vital as there is no time during the day to teach the essential theory to enable you to understand the practical aspects of the course. The pre-learning pages can be downloaded in a zip folder from the button below:
The classroom SRC/VHF radio course and assessment starts at 09.00 and will end at approximately at 18.00. Please ensure you follow the steps on BELOW to pay for the exam and get your RYA Exam Application form which allows you to participate in the exam. (these often go to spam, please check there) The assessment will take about 1 hour during which you will be tested on your home study and course content.
Candidates are expected to have the basic knowledge of the phonetic alphabet and the operation of VHFs you will be given a copy of the G31 VHF Handbook on arrival for the course.
Please bring the following with you;
1) Pen & paper.
2) RYA SRC exam application form (see above).
3) Recent colour passport photo (NOT POLAROID)
4) IF YOU HAVE COMPLETED THE ONLINE COURSE please print out and bring the course completion certificate
PRE-LEARNING
Listed below are some pre-course study tasks, an essential part of the course as you will be tested on these topics during the exam. This should take you about three hours to complete. All of the below is contained in the zip file downloaded from the above button.
• Read chapters 1, 2 and 3 of the RYA VHF Handbook
• Read Chapters 4, 5 and 6
• Read Chapters 9 and 10
• Familiarise yourself with the phonetic alphabet, page 42
• Read about the Distress Call and Message on pages 44 & 45
RYA Exam Payment
The SRC exam fee is £70 and covers the cost of the examiner and the administration of processing and issuing the certificate. This fee is payable directly to the RYA.
Prior to taking the exam, use the RYA online exam payment system to pay for the exam and receive a personalised exam application form. Print this out and take it with you to the exam, together with your passport sized photo. (these often go to spam, please check there)

Engine Course Joining Instructions
Course content: This course is delivered in compliance with RYA training standards and has their approval (diesel engine course only). This course will educate you how your engine operates, how to maintain its health with routine inspections and maintenance, and how to basic fault find it in the event of a failure.
Training Requirements: It is imperative that all trainees possess fluency in reading, speaking, and understanding English, as a component of the training entails communicating in dangerous situations.
Equipment/Clothing: you will require Overalls or Working clothes, (you might get diesel, oil or grease on them), safety boots (if possible or study footwear, wet weather gear (i.e. anorak etc.). We can supply gloves and safety glasses.
Hours: The courses will run each day from 09:00 till 17:00 unless otherwise stated at time of booking and on course booking confirmation.
Certificate: Upon successful passing of the exams a course completion certificate will be issued. The training centre will maintain record of this for seven years.
Navigation Course Joining Instructions
There are several classroom courses in the RYA Navigation scheme, these vary in length from 2 days to 6 days. Some of them we may run as evening classes or as non-consecutive days.This will be detailed on your booking confirmation.
Number of Days:
Essential Navigation and Seamanship – 16 Hours (normally 2 days)
Day Skipper Shorebased – 40 Hours plus exam time (normally 5 days)
Coastal Skipper/Yachtmaster Shorebased – 40 Hours plus exam time (normally 6 days as more exams than Dayskipper)
Hours: The courses will run each day from 09:00 till 17:00 unless otherwise stated at time of booking and on course booking confirmation.
Exams: If the course contains exams these will be given to the students at a time deemed appropriate by the instructor. They will then be marked by the instructor and feedback given.
Certificate: Upon successful passing of the exams a course completion certificate will be issued. The training centre will maintain record of this for seven years.
Online Courses Joining Instructions
Once you have purchased your RYA Online course that will be hosted on the RYA’s Interactive system you will be emailed some login details within 24 hours of course purchase that will enable you to access and work your way through your course.
If you have any questions regarding your RYA online course please send an email to the address that can be found in the same email that contains your login information.
Once you have completed your online course, your certificate of completion is downloadable there and then from the RYA interactive software, this is not applicable to the Essential Navigation online course, we will post your certificate to your for this course.
NOTE: If you have enrolled on the online VHF course you will be required to conact us upon course completion to arrange your VHF SRC exam.
